In the old days, common people were allowed to pick leaves from these trees only after the royal household had already picked theirs, meaning that the best part of the tea tree of this Pu-erh was only available to the royal family, as a symbol of wealth and power. The reason it was so popular among the royal family was that it has outstanding health benefits, including relieving the uncomfortableness after eating a greasy meal or loosening the bowels to relieve constipation. Considering that the royal family had luxurious food every day including massive amount of meat delicacies, it is not surprising that the tea became popular!

From a certain point of view, dried tangerine and Pu-Erh tea are made for each other. From the Ming dynasty, dried tangerine started to be treated as a very special tea because of its unique medical value and natural fruity aroma. Pu-Erh was brewed together with dried tangerine by coincidence in the Qing Dynasty. Since then, this combination has become popular throughout the country.

During the production of the tea, the green tangerine was dried which helps to retain its ball shape in order to wrap the Pu-Erh tea leaves inside. The green tangerine of our orange-peel style Pu-Erh tea comes from Xin Hui in Guangdong province which is the hometown of dried tangerine and famous for its best mandarin garden. The technology of making tangerine is regarded as one of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

This particular Tangerine Ripe Pu-erh is made by the well-known Fuhai Tea Factory. The tea leaves wrapped inside are 2011-year Emperor’s Royal ripe Pu-erh tea leaves originating from Meng Hai County in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan province.

The production methods dehydrate the tea leaves to a water content of only 20-30%; the final dry tea leaves smell very sour, but the sourness is only very light in the taste. The main difference in production is in the shaking time: the leaves are shaken much less for Sour-Style Tieguanyin. Instead, the tea leaves are left to sit for a long time. Fixation waits until the morning of the next day when the grass scent has totally disappeared and been replaced by the sour aroma.

This style of Tieguanyin was actually invented by accident when a hot, rainy day made some tea growers feel too dizzy and short of breath to fire the tea, which was just left to sit. The next day, they found the tea had already turned sour. However, they sold it nonetheless and it proved very popular. Since then, tea growers have made this style of Tieguanyin on purpose.

Its leaves are palm-sized and resemble the shape of a mandarin orange. It was initially planted in a Buddhist temple, hence the name “Buddha’s Hand.”

Legend has it that in the 29th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty, an old monk from Qihu Rock in Anxi successfully grafted tea branches onto a Xiang Yuan tree. In the 43rd year of Kangxi’s reign, the tea variety was introduced to Shifeng Village in Dapu, Yongchun. Due to its unique characteristics, it was further introduced to places like Wuyishan, where it merged with the local features and preserved the fragrance of Snow Pear while gaining the distinctive Wuyi rock essence.
