It is made in a traditional way: each leaf is hand-selected and adjusted. The tea is produced without the use of any chemical protection products for plants.

Appearance & Taste

This Premium Taiping Houkui tea does not have a gorgeous appearance but has a wonderful yet complex taste, using the two leaves with one bud standard. The overall shape of the tea leaves is straight, flat, slim and long, with some white fuzzy. The surface of the tea leaves has grid marks due to the grinding process which is normal.

The taste of this tea is fresh, sweet and complex. It has a natural orchid aroma with a hint of nutty roasted flavour. The tea soup is smooth and mellow, with a lingering aftertaste.

Brewing Guide

Recommend using Bottom-Drop (what’s this?) menthod for brewing the tea.

  1. Warm the teaware with hot water. Discard the water afterwards
  2. Add 3g for teacup (125ML), 6g for glass (250ML) and 12g for tea pot (500ML)
  3. Pour hot water (80–85°C) into the teaware until it is one-third full
  4. Tilt the teaware, slowly rotating it two times (this is to ensure a better infusion)
  5. Fill the teaware with hot water (80–85°C)
  6. Infuse tea for around 1-2 minutes, if using gaiwan gongfu, the first brew can be around 60s, the second time is around 2mins, then gradually increase steeping time for subsequent brewing
  7. Drink until 1/3 of the tea is left before refilling
  8. Can be brewed a total of four times
  9. Gradually increase steeping time for subsequent brews.

In the first brew, you can enjoy the fragrance of orchids while the second round releases a mellower taste, and the third and fourth brews produce a different but more delicate fragrance.

Origin

This premium grade Taiping Houkui belongs to traditional group species produced from the Monkey Village (Hou-pit), Huangshan Area, Anhui province. The superior natural condition in this area is the key to producing this premium quality Monkey tea.

The origin is more than 700 metres above sea level, located inside the magic 30-degree north latitude. The average annual rainfall is 1,558 mm there, and the annual average humidity is 79%. Foggy days there are more than 240 days every year, which makes the average annual sunshine duration shorter, around 1,727.4 hours. The weather there is humidified and foggy. The rainfall there is abundant which causes a large amount of water vapor. The tea garden is surrounded by clouds and mists, which further forms the microclimate environment of the Taiping Houkui tea area.

The soil there is combined with weathered phyllite, granite and shale. The type the soil is mainly flat stone and yellow soil and it is deep and fertile, with a thick organic layer, and rich in humus. It also contains abundant trace elements which are necessary for the growth of this premium Monkey tea.

Timing & Ingredients

Ingredients: Taiping Houkui is made using a bud with two leaves. It requires fat and strong buds and leaves – the tips of the bud and the leaves should be aligned.

At first, one bud with 3-4 leaves was picked from the tea tree. The factory then restricts it to two leaves. This is to ensure the leaves can keep their shape until ready for processing.

Picking: Taiping Houkui is only picked on sunny days, and the quality is well-controlled by avoiding:

  • Tea leaves have no bud
  • Bud and leaves are too small or too large
  • Bud and leaves are too thin
  • Bud and leaves are too curved
  • Bud and leaves are purple in colour
  • Bud is not straight
  • Bud and leaves are very pale
  • Bud and leaves have been damaged by disease.
