About Premium Phoenix Dan Cong Dong Fang Hong

This premium grade Phoenix Dan Cong comes from the Wu Dong Village, Chao Zhou City, Guang Dong City. In 1995, this aromatic Phoenix Dan Cong was dedicated to Chairman Mao, the former president of China. He really loved it and sent back a thanks note after trying the tea. This tea has then been called ‘Dong Fang Hong’, the literal translation of which is ‘The Red in the East’, and with a free translation of ‘hope’ as Chairman Mao is the one who save thousands of millions of people from a miserable life and lead them to the light.
Wu Dong Village, where the sea level is between 1000 and 1200 metres, is the hometown of high-quality Phoenix Dan Cong. Phoenix Dan Cong produced here is extremely mellow and has a unique high mountain charm. This Phoenix Dan Cong Dong Fang Hong belongs to the yellow gardenia fragrance type. However, it has a much mellower taste and richer combined aroma than the ordinary Phoenix Dan Cong yellow gardenia flavour. Its aroma is full of impressiveness and enchantment.

Appearance & Taste

The appearance of Phoenix Dan Cong Oolong tea leaves is long and slim, while they become large and stalky after brewing. The tea soup is bright yellow.

It has a complex aroma. The dominant fragrance is like the smell of yellow gardenia; besides, it also has a fruity, honey and floral flavour. Its tea soup is thick and smooth. As the tea tree was grown at a high sea level, it also has obviously charming taste of old bush trees from high mountains. You will be surely amazed at the first sip of the tea.

Kongfu Style

Warm the Gaiwan/tiny teapot with hot water; discard the water afterward
Add 1g of Oolong tea for every 20ml – 30ml of water (recommend 8g of tea leaves, adjustable by personal taste)
Pour hot water (100 °C) into the clay teapot / Gaiwan, tilt it, slowly rotate it twice and quickly discard the water (this step is for waking up tea leaves and stimulating the special aroma of the oolong tea)
Refill the clay teapot/Gaiwan with hot water
Infuse the tea for around 2-3s for the first brew, and less than 5s for the second to tenth brews. After that, it may need an extra 5-8s infusion time for further brews.
Serve the steeped tea into a serving cup and divided it into small teacups and you are good to enjoy.

Origin

This premium grade Phoenix Dan Cong comes from the Wu Dong Village, Chao Zhou City, Guang Dong City. The trees there are lush, surrounded by streams that flow through the valley. The mountain is surrounded by clouds and mists all year round, forming humid weather, and the day-night temperature difference there is large. The rainfall is abundant, and the sunshine duration is short. The soil is thick and fertile, containing rich organic substances and microelements. They are conducive to the formation of tea polyphenols and aromatic substances. All these together provide superior growing conditions for the tea trees of the tea.

Cultivar and Picking

The name ‘Dan Cong’ means ‘single shrub of tea cultivars’. It is selected from the high-quality Phoenix Shuixuan Species Group, cultivated and picked individually. There are many sub-cultivars under the group of the Phoenix Shuixian cultivars, and each individual shrub has its own characteristic in terms of the tea leaves and taste.

Based on the different quality of the raw materials generated from Phoenix Shuixuan Species Group and the different levels of production processes, the quality of its sub-cultivars, from high to low, can be sorted as Phoenix Dan Cong, Phoenix Lang Cai, and Phoenix Shuixian. In simple words, Phoenix Dan Cong is the upgraded version of Phoenix Shuixian.

Phoenix Dan Cong has dozens of strains and types. According to the introduction of Chaozhou Phoenix tea tree resources and documentation, Phoenix tea has 79 different natural flower flavours, 12 natural fruit aromas, and 16 different fragrances.

Phoenix Dan Cong is picked before or after the Pure Brightness (before and after April 4th, 5th, or 6th), once per year.
