About ZhengYan Wuyi Big Red Robe (Da Hong Pao)

This ZhengYan Da Hong Pao is sourced from an edge mountain area within the ZhengYan system of Wuyi Mountain. Although not from a core named cliff, it remains within the true ZhengYan zone. ZhengYan refers to rock teas grown on Danxia rock formations, valued for structure, mineral character, and stable returning sweetness rather than purely high aroma.

Positioned as a daily-drinking ZhengYan tea, this Da Hong Pao offers clear rock character, orchid-led floral aroma, and a clean, well-defined structure. The liquor is full and supported, with evident returning sweetness, a clear throat feel, and a lasting finish. The style is upright and balanced, showing the backbone expected of Wuyi rock tea, with strong value for its category.

Appearance & Taste

ZhengYan Wuyi Big Red Robe (Da Hong Pao)

The dry leaves are tightly twisted and elongated, dark brown with a natural sheen. The roast is clean and controlled, with a firm, well-built leaf structure.

Early infusions produce a bright orange-yellow liquor, gradually deepening to orange-red. The taste is smooth and full, never thin. Rock character is clear, with lingering sweetness and a clean, extended aftertaste. Orchid aroma integrates naturally with gentle roast notes, giving the tea a steady, resilient profile across infusions.

Re-steep for 6-8 infusions or more, depending on personal taste. If not using a Gaiwan Gongfu style, steep for around 1-2 minutes. Re-steep for 2–3 infusions.

Origin

Wuyi Mountain

The tea comes from an edge mountain area within the ZhengYan zone of Wuyi Mountain. The rocky terrain and mineral-rich soils provide the essential foundation for rock tea. While less intense than core cliff sites, this area delivers stable quality, clear structure, and reliable ZhengYan character, making it well suited for regular enjoyment.

  1. Marcus T.

Solid rock oolong with proper mineral backbone and orchid notes coming through cleanly. The roast is restrained enough to let the leaf quality show. Holds up well across six or seven steeps without falling apart. Good everyday ZhengYan at a reasonable price point.

  2. Amelia

Love this Wuyi oolong for its balanced rock character and sweet orchid aroma.

  3. Marcus T.

There’s something about the mineral backbone here that reminds me of wet stone after rain. The orchid comes through subtly, never overpowering. It’s the kind of tea that improves as you slow down and pay attention to what’s happening in your mouth between sips.
