About Aged Shoumei White Tea

Shoumei is a classic type of Fujian white tea made from larger leaves rich in natural compounds. It is processed through sun withering and natural drying without frying or rolling, allowing the tea to retain its original character and age slowly over time.

Compared with Silver Needle and White Peony, Shoumei has a fuller leaf structure and stronger aging potential. As it continues to rest naturally, the tea becomes smoother, more balanced and easier to drink, making it a comforting everyday white tea appreciated for its mild and approachable nature.

Appearance & Taste

Aged Shoumei White Tea

Shoumei is known for its naturally curved, relaxed leaves. The broad leaves and clear stems show layered hues from yellow-brown to light chestnut, giving the dry tea a natural, woodland look.

The liquor is clear and bright, ranging from golden to orange yellow. The taste is aromatic, mellow and sweet, with gentle floral notes and a natural honeyed tone that develops over time. The profile is smooth and rounded, with light woody undertones, and longer storage brings pleasant hints of jujube and lotus. The brewed leaves are soft, even and supple, showing clean and healthy aging.

Taste: Floral, Honey, Jujube, Lotus, Sweet, Woody

Origin

Fujian

This Shoumei is produced in Fuding, Fujian, one of the core regions for traditional white tea. The coastal mountain environment, with its misty climate, high humidity and gentle light, allows the tea trees to grow slowly and develop rich inner substances. Local cultivars such as Fuding Dahao and Fuding Dabai are well-known for their refined aroma and sturdy leaves, making them ideal for crafting Shoumei that ages naturally and steadily.

The region’s environment, combined with traditional processing methods, gives aged Shoumei a clean and stable character. Its liquor stays clear, soft and bright, showing the comfort and purity that define Fuding white tea.

Picking and Production

Picking Tea

Shoumei is primarily picked as one bud with two or three leaves. After harvesting, the leaves are withered under natural sunlight to slowly lose moisture and develop aroma, followed by indoor resting to maintain the traditional white tea principle of natural transformation.

The tea is then stored in a dry and clean environment where it gradually shifts from greenish tones to warm yellow-brown and orange-brown. Its taste evolves from fresh to smooth and sweet without any artificial processing or heat-forcing, representing true naturally aged Shoumei.

This is a very nice tea, but keep in mind a few things:
Because it is aged it is a different flavour to normal white tea. It’s not musty, or like Puer Chen, it’s its own thing. If you think it will taste like a normal peony/Bai mu dan white tea, then you will be surprised or disappointed because it’s quite different.
Brewing gongfu it took a few steeps to open up, so give it some time.
The flavour is very complex, and both strong and mild at the same time. It has body, but it’s very rounded. There is some herbal and malty flavour. It is not “feet-y” like some oolongs, which is good. The smell on the lid of the gaiwan is very earthy, but the tea itself is not really. I am impressed!

Also it’s one of the cheapest teas on here so I say get some and try it out!

Visually, this tea reminds us of the fallen leaves of Autumn. Flavour-wise, it is very subtle and floral.
